Faculty and staff of UIowa CSD stand with and support Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). We denounce and reject systemic racism and are learning to recognize its impact on our clients, students, faculty, and staff of color. We heed the call from President Harreld to ‘lead change within our individual communities to actively disrupt racism’. In our roles as clinicians, teachers, researchers, and administrators, we will educate ourselves and deal with the discomfort inherent in dismantling structures that oppress marginalized communities. We must recognize the mistakes we have made in our field, and take immediate steps to learn about the mistakes we have made in our department. We commit to removing long held barriers that impede BIPOC from participating in our profession. We commit to dismantling a system that over-diagnoses and under-serves black people with cognitive communication disorders. We have a long way to go, but we MUST do better. We are committed to listening to the voices of BIPOC, and particularly at this time, the Black community. We stand in solidarity. #blacklivesmatter
