Bob McMurray, CSD adjunct associate professor, and his research team had to shift gears quickly when the pandemic threatened to halt his work.

McMurray heads the Growing Words Project, an initiative that seeks to better understand how elementary-age children recognize words, build a vocabulary, and develop crucial reading skills. This, in turn, can lead to interventions for children with language disorders or dyslexia to help struggling children earlier and give them the word-learning assistance they need.

The researchers originally obtained $2.1 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health for the research.

Just when the project ramped up, the pandemic hit, and McMurray and his team quickly adapted to on-line testing to assess children.
