Title: "Treat the deficit: Shortcomings and opportunities in dysphagia management"

Speaker: Dr. Corinne Jones, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dysphagia assessment and treatment has undergone several advancements in the past decade. However, many big-picture questions still face clinicians, resulting in non-specific and inefficient management practices. In this talk, I will dive into three shortcomings with the “treat the deficit” model of dysphagia management: 1) What to do in early-stage Parkinson disease when there are no visible deficits; 2) How does interindividual variation complicate comparison to published norms; and 3) How can we directly address pathophysiology in rehabilitation? Each shortcoming presents an opportunity to push the field forward into physiology-driven assessment and treatment practices, and I will address some of my recent research endeavors and future visions.

Attendees are encouraged to join in person in HSAB 2004. Seating is limited (first-come, first-served, ~50 seats), but the seminar will also be available via Zoom.
