Kellsie Busho

Kellsie Busho, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences (CSD) and Disorders in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, currently serves as the director of clinical programs – audiology in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic

The Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic recently moved into a new space in the Health Sciences Academic Building. The clinic offers services in audiology and speech-language pathology while providing world-class clinical education to students.

Hear from Kellsie about the day-to-day operations of the clinic and the opportunities it provides in this Q&A.

What does your day-to-day look like at the clinic?

A typical day in the clinic starts with checking in with students to make sure they are prepared for the day’s patients. I'm with second-years this semester, so they are more independent. During the appointments, I am observing or jumping in for more complex cases and new experiences for students.

What do you find to be the most rewarding part of working with students?

It's cliche, but I truly do learn so much from the students. They bring energy and excitement to the clinic and help me think about clinic and patient care in new ways.

What hands-on learning opportunities do students have in the clinic?

Students are the clinicians! They prepare for appointments prior to seeing the patients, so as much as can be anticipated and planned for, the students are doing.  Patients are still receiving high quality patient care with future clinicians excited to move their careers forward.

Are there any new types of technology being used in the new clinic? If so, what are they?

We recently obtained funding for an ear scanner! A while ago, we had a patient where a traditional earmold impression wasn't feasible. Scanning technology enables us to train students and utilize it on patients in a less invasive manner.

What are you looking forward to accomplishing this year in the clinic?

I'm looking forward to seeing growth in our students. It’s so rewarding every time they learn a new skill and help someone with their hearing healthcare.

How to access the clinic
