Ruth Bentler, Ph.D.
A leading authority in hearing aid technology and adult aural rehabilitation, Ruth Bentler (PhD ’87) has built a career that spans four decades of innovation, mentorship, and service to the field of audiology. Her connection to the University of Iowa began in 1967 and continued through her master’s and doctoral training, her faculty appointment in 1987, and her leadership of the Communication Sciences and Disorders program from 2011 to 2017.
Bentler’s academic path at Iowa unfolded across three distinct periods, each shaping her professional direction. She entered the university as a math major, later developing a strong interest in hearing science. Supported by a Maternal and Child Health stipend during graduate study, she thrived in a program known for its rigorous training and exceptional faculty.
After several years as a clinical audiologist, she returned to the department as a part‑time supervisor and soon pursued doctoral study under the mentorship of David Hawkins. This experience solidified her focus on hearing aids and adult rehabilitation—areas in which she would become internationally recognized.
Bentler describes her career as one shaped by openness to new opportunities and a commitment to hard work. Her contributions as a clinician, researcher, educator, and program leader have left a lasting impact on the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
We are proud to honor Ruth Bentler’s distinguished career and her enduring influence on the field of audiology.
