Christian Herbst, PhD
Christian T. Herbst is an Austrian voice scientist and voice pedagogue. He earned a Master’s degree from Mozarteum University, Salzburg, Austria. In the course of teaching several thousand voice lessons in the last three decades, Christian became interested in the physics and the physiology of voice. He enrolled in a PhD program in biophysics at the University of Olomouc, Czech Republic, from which he graduated in 2012. He has been active as a full-time voice researcher ever since. The focus of Christian’s work is on basic voice science, singing voice physiology and acoustics, and on mammalian voice production. Christian has received eleven international academic awards (with Van Lawrence awards from both NATS and the British Voice Association). He has to date published 80 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, including three publications in the prestigious Science journal. Christian is a member of The Voice Foundation’s advisory board and Sundberg-Titze-Award committee. He serves as associate editor of the Journal of Singing and is editorial board member of the Journal of Voice and the Journal of Singing. A respected voice in his field, he has appeared on BBC, NPR, and NATS Chats.
