Paul J. Abbas had a long and esteemed career as an auditory physiologist and cochlear implant expert at the University of Iowa. He was a long-standing and highly valued member of the faculty.

Paul J. Abbas,  professor emeritus in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2024.

Abbas was a beloved and brilliant colleague, mentor, and friend. He had a long, esteemed career as an auditory physiologist and cochlear implant expert at the University of Iowa and was a long-standing and highly valued member of the faculty and mentor to students and alumni in the department. 

His scientific contributions were foundational in understanding the auditory pathway and the encoding of various domains of acoustic/electric signals with noninvasive measures in humans. He leaves a lasting impression with words that continue to breed insight, techniques that create opportunity, and a legacy of lives enhanced.

"Our department is strong and vibrant because of the efforts of people like Paul," Eric Hunter, chair of the department, said. "I am sure he would be proud of what has been built and its continuing impact. He is missed."

The family has requested memorial contributions can be made to support the Paul Abbas Scholarship Fund at the University of Iowa. Contributions in his memory can be made payable to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement; and mailed to: University of Iowa Center for Advancement P.O. Box 4550 Iowa City, IA 52244-4550. This is an endowed fund to be used to support graduate students in the hearing program.
